Herbal Medicine

For those looking to learn more about herbal medicine, there are numerous resources available to help expand your knowledge. One way to start is by reading books, magazines, and websites that are recommended by established herbalists. They contain a wealth of information about different types of herbs, their medicinal properties, and how to use them. There are also many online classes led by experienced herbalists that can provide you with structured learning and deeper insights. You could also consider finding an organic herb gardener to work alongside and learn from. This hands-on approach can help you understand the growth and harvesting of herbs before they are prepared into remedies.

Another great way to immerse yourself in the world of herbal medicine is by attending herb conferences, workshops, or weekly or monthly study groups. These gatherings offer a great opportunity to learn from experienced folks, engage in discussions, and even network with like-minded individuals. Similarly, herb and garden walks led by herbalists can provide valuable knowledge about medicinal plants in your growing zone. Finally, becoming an apprentice or intern with a practicing herbalist could provide you with real-world experience.

Western Herbalism, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Ayurveda are all distinct systems of herbal medicine, but they have different philosophical foundations, diagnostic methods, and treatment strategies.

Western Herbalism is based on the traditions of European and North American medicine and uses a variety of herbs native to these regions. It looks at the individual as a whole, taking into account not only any physical symptoms, but also the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person's health. It acknowledges that each individual is unique and that personal lifestyle factors, including diet and stress levels, significantly contribute to overall health.

Herbs in Western Herbalism are recognized for their individual properties and can be used alone or in combination to help restore balance and support the body's inherent healing capabilities. A Western herbalist may tailor a blend of herbs to suit a person's specific needs, considering not just the alleviation of symptoms but also promoting long-term health and wellness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses in different ways on restoring balance within the body. It's based on concepts such as Qi (vital energy), Yin and Yang (opposing forces), and the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). In TCM, herbs are often used in combinations in an attempt to balance their various properties and to tailor the treatment to the individual patient's condition.

Ayurveda, originating from India, focuses on balancing the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) which are believed to govern all physical and mental processes in the body. Ayurvedic practitioners often use herbal formulations, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments to restore balance and promote health.

While all three systems use herbs as part of their treatment strategies, the principles guiding their use, the way diagnoses are made, and the overall philosophical underpinnings of each system are distinctly different. It's important to note that these systems have been developed over thousands of years and have their own unique characteristics.

Products

A full spectrum liquid herbal extract is a type of herbal product made through a process akin to steeping tea, where the herb is soaked in a solution of water and an extract menstruum, such as organic grain alcohol and/or organic vegetable glycerin. This process is intended to draw out the beneficial compounds and nutrients of the herb, resulting in a product that is rich and vibrant. Unlike standardized extracts, full spectrum extracts are not processed further to concentrate specific constituents or compounds.

Standardized liquid herbal extracts undergo additional processing to ensure they contain precise amounts of certain active constituents. These extracts are standardized to a particular concentration of one or more specific compounds, and this is often done to ensure consistency and potency.

While standardized extracts provide consistency, we prefer full spectrum extracts because they are made with a traditional approach and preserve a wider range of the herb's beneficial compounds. We believe that all parts of the herb work together synergistically and that preserving the full range of compounds can offer broader health benefits.

Since our extracts are not standardized, they do not have exact, measured strengths. When you purchase one of our extracts, what you receive in the bottle is a fresh representation of the selected herb's whole vitality.

The shelf life of each of our products may be determined by checking the "Best By" date on the product label. Look for the barcode on the label and you will see the "Best By" date printed adjacent to this.

In general, the shelf life of our products is as follows:

• Tinctures = 6 years
• Glycerites & Elixirs = 2.5 years
• Oils = 2 years
• Crèmes & Salves = 1.5 years
• Teas = 1 year

The shelf life of individual products may vary slightly from the above, depending on the ingredients used.

Our crèmes & salves maintain their freshness longer if you take care to always apply them with clean fingers.

Note that our products may lose their freshness prematurely if they are stored in a warm or sunny place. We recommend that you keep our products stored in a dark, cool cabinet whenever possible. Any of our products containing oils, such as our body oils, crèmes, and salves, are especially vulnerable to oxidizing prematurely if subjected to extended heat. Discard any oil-based product that has a stale oil smell, as it may have oxidized and no longer be fresh. We recommend using our products before their "Best By" date lapses.

Our product labels do not carry the "certified organic" mark, even though we follow organic farming practices, due to the extensive time, money, and overhead involved in the organic certification process. As a small business, we have made a strategic decision to concentrate our resources on ensuring the high quality of our gardening and the creation of our herbal products, rather than on the certification process itself.

However, it's important to note that our gardens are certified by both the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) as organic and by Demeter as Biodynamic. These certifications uphold rigorous standards for sustainable farming, ensuring that our practices are in line with principles of environmental stewardship and healthy soil management.

So while our product labels may not say "certified organic," our customer family can be confident that our products are grown and processed using sustainable organic and Biodynamic practices, and that our top priority is always the quality and integrity of our herbal products.

Our product labels do not carry the "Demeter Certified Biodynamic" mark, even though we follow Biodynamic farming practices, due to the extensive time, money, and overhead involved in the Biodynamic product certification process. As a small business, we have made a strategic decision to concentrate our resources on ensuring the high quality of our gardening and the creation of our herbal products, rather than on the product certification process itself.

In addition to this, some of our products contain ingredients that cannot be sourced as Biodynamic, such as those which are consciously wildcrafted. This does make some of our products ineligible for Demeter certified Biodynamic status.

However, it's important to note that our gardens are certified by both Demeter as Biodynamic and by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) as organic. These certifications uphold rigorous standards for sustainable farming, ensuring that our practices are in line with principles of environmental stewardship and healthy soil management.

So while our product labels may not say "Demeter Certified Biodynamic," our customer family can be confident that our products are grown and processed using sustainable Biodynamic and organic practices, and that our top priority is always the quality and integrity of our herbal products.

The recommended dosage, or suggested use, depends on the age, weight, and sensitivity of each individual. Some individuals may find they need less than the suggested use on the label. We recommend checking in with your herbalist or holistic practitioner about dosages that will work for you.

Each of our products has a "Suggested Use" statement on the label which outlines the suggested dosage. Many of our extracts' "Suggested Use" statements indicate 10-20 drops 1-3 times per day, but check the label of your extract for more details.

For general, ongoing wellness support, if taking an herbal extract long term, we recommend taking a week-long break every six months and checking in about long term use with your herbalist or holistic practitioner.

Each of our single herbal extracts is labeled with the plant to menstruum ratio. A 1:5 ratio means 1 part plant in 5 parts extract menstruum.

Our typical suggested use for herbal extracts is:

Adult: 10-20 drops mixed in 1-2 ounces of water.

Child: 1 drop/5 pounds of body weight mixed in 1-2 ounces of water or sugar-free juice. As a general guideline for children, we use Clark's Rule: Divide the child's weight (in pounds) by 150. This gives you the fraction of the adult dose appropriate to give a child. Please consult with your herbalist or holistic practitioner before giving extracts to a child, as some are too strong for children.

Pets: Please consult with your veterinarian. Usually, 1 drop of an extract for every 5 lbs of body weight.

Extracts in comparison to capsules:

We cannot give a comparison of our full spectrum liquid herbal extracts with products that come in capsule form. For information on capsule products, consult the product-specific labeling.

Measurements:

1/4 tsp dose is approximately 1mL to 1.25mL of extract.

A 1oz bottle of extract holds approximately 30mL.

No, we do not irradiate or fumigate any of the ingredients used in our products. We firmly believe in the importance of maintaining the purity of our ingredients, and as such, we ensure that they remain unaltered and free from such treatments. Our commitment is to provide customers with high quality herbal products that are traditionally-crafted and retain the natural integrity of the plants from which they are derived.

Yes, we routinely test our products for heavy metals, including lead. We utilize an advanced analytical technique known as Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for this purpose. This method enables us to accurately detect and measure even trace amounts of heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead present in our products. ICP-MS works by vaporizing the sample and breaking it down to its atomic level, allowing us to identify and quantify each metal of interest. This precise and sensitive technique assures that our products meet the strictest quality and safety standards, underlining our commitment to providing you with the purest, highest quality herbal products.

The majority of the ingredients used in our products are grown right here in our gardens in Rockport, Maine. We take pride in cultivating our herbs using sustainable organic and Biodynamic practices. For ingredients that we can't grow ourselves, we source from trusted partner farmers across the United States who also uphold our commitment to organic and, whenever possible, Biodynamic farming.

At Avena Botanicals, ensuring the quality of our herbal products is a fundamental principle that has been with us since our inception. We believe that the best results come from handcrafting products in small batches, a philosophy we uphold by manufacturing our products in our on-site Production Kitchen.

Our dedicated team has established a quality program that complies with regulatory requirements and incorporates documented current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs). This program ensures consistent creation of high-quality products that meet our stringent standards and exceed our customers' expectations.

Quality control extends to all stages of our production process. All our finished herbal extracts are tested according to our established quality specifications, which confirm the presence of correct ingredients and the absence of bacterial and heavy metals contamination. This involves inspections for correct color, taste, and odor, along with microbiological testing for harmful bacteria, yeasts, and molds, and mass spectrometry testing for heavy metals.

Understanding the concentration of herbs in our products begins with knowing the type of herbal product you're using. We produce full spectrum liquid herbal extracts, created with a method similar to steeping tea. The herb is soaked in a solution of water and an extract menstruum, such as organic grain alcohol and/or organic vegetable glycerin, to pull out the beneficial compounds and nutrients of the herb. This process yields a product that is rich, vibrant, and full of the herb's natural goodness.

By comparison, standardized liquid herbal extracts go through extra steps to guarantee they contain precise amounts of specific active compounds. This is done to ensure consistency and potency. However, while standardized extracts offer uniformity, we favor full spectrum extracts for their traditional approach and their preservation of a wider array of the herb's beneficial compounds.

This is because we believe in the synergy of the herb's components -- that all parts of the herb work in harmony to offer broader health benefits. As such, our extracts do not have exact, measured strengths in milligrams per herb. Instead, each bottle of our extract is a fresh and vibrant representation of the herb's full vitality, preserving as many of the natural benefits as possible.

The slight variations you may notice in our herbal products from batch to batch are a natural occurrence and a testament to the organic and artisanal nature of our production process. Just like each season brings changes in the color, taste, and texture of fruits and vegetables, different herb harvests can also yield variations in color, taste, and consistency.

Various factors like weather conditions, soil properties, and the time of harvest can all affect the characteristics of the herbs we grow. This means that two batches of the same herbal product, made from herbs harvested at different times or seasons, might not look or taste exactly the same.

Despite these minor variations, you can rest assured that the quality, vitality, and beneficial properties of our products remain consistent. Our rigorous quality assurance process ensures that every product we make meets our high standards, providing you with the best that our gardens have to offer.

No, our products do not contain tree nuts, nor do we process any ingredients in our production facility that contain nuts. Our products are safe for individuals with nut allergies or sensitivities.

Yes, our products are free from corn and do not contain corn allergens. However, it's worth noting that the organic grain alcohol used in most of our herbal extracts is derived from corn. Despite this, the distillation process involved in producing the alcohol removes proteins, effectively eliminating potential allergens. This makes our products suitable for most individuals with corn sensitivities.

Vegetable glycerin is a sugar alcohol, which means that it tastes sweet and is classified as a carbohydrate, but it doesn't raise blood sugar levels in the same way as actual sugar. Its glycemic index is very low, which makes glycerin-based products such as our glycerites a safe choice for individuals with blood sugar intolerance or diabetes.

Yes, our products are free from soy. We do not use any soy-based ingredients in the formulation of our products, making them suitable for individuals with soy allergies or sensitivities.

No, our products do not contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). We are committed to using only the purest ingredients in our products. We grow most of our ingredients ourselves on our certified organic and Biodynamic® farm, which is GMO-free. What we can't grow ourselves, we source from partner farmers with great care, obtaining Certificates of Authenticity (CoA's) and ensuring that they are certified organic and/or Biodynamic®, and GMO-free.

We are firmly committed to the inherent wisdom of nature without genetic modification. We believe in respecting natural biodiversity and the preservation of organic and Biodynamic® farming practices, which are displaced by the use of GMOs. We feel that our commitment to non-GMO products supports both the health of our customers and the health of the planet.

All of our products are vegetarian-friendly. The majority of our products are suitable for vegans, however, there are a few exceptions:

Our "Herbal Throat Support with Honey" spray contains honey and propolis, both derived from bees. Our "Herbal Zing" blended tincture contains propolis as well.

Our topical crèmes, salves, and balms that contain beeswax, such as Elder Flower Crème, Fairy Flower Crème, Firefly Balm, Heal All Salve, Lemon Balm Lip Salve, Rose Crème, and Yoni Crème, are not considered vegan.

We also carry some third-party products, like Wandering Goat soap, which contain goat's milk and, as such, are not vegan.

No, we do not test any of our products on animals. We are committed to producing products that are ethically crafted, sustainable, and cruelty-free.

No, none of our products contain added artificial or natural flavors. We believe in maintaining the purity of our herbal products, and as such, all the tastes and aromas in our products come directly from the organic plant-based ingredients themselves.

For those of you unfamiliar with these terms, in the food and beverage industry:

"Artificial flavors" refers to any flavoring agents that are not derived from a natural source such as a fruit, vegetable, spice, or animal product. These flavors are synthesized by chemists in a lab to create a specific taste. Artificial flavors are often used in processed foods because they are cheaper and have a longer shelf life than natural flavors.

"Natural flavors" refers to concentrated extracts, essences, or distillates derived from plant or animal matter, which are used primarily for flavoring, not nutritional value. Even though "natural flavors" originate from natural sources such as plants or animals, they undergo heavy-duty processing and significant refining before they are used in food products, and might not be much like the original natural source at all.

Yes, we offer several alcohol-free glycerites. Glycerites are made using vegetable glycerin as the extraction solvent instead of alcohol. These are ideal for individuals who prefer to avoid alcohol for personal, dietary, or medical reasons. Glycerites also have a pleasant, sweet taste, making them more palatable for some people, especially children.

Note that, in the context of liquid herbal extracts, a solvent is a substance used to dissolve the vital compounds from the herb material, facilitating their absorption into liquid form. Despite the technical term, the solvents used in our herbal extracts aren't harmful chemicals. They are naturally-derived substances that help us capture the constituent elements of herbs in a form that's easy to use and supportive of your health. The vegetable glycerin that we use in our glycerites as natural solvents are certified organic and also gluten-free.

Yes, the alcohol we use in our products is certified organic. It is derived from corn and is sourced from vendors that we trust, who adhere to the strictest quality standards. We also perform additional quality checks on the alcohol we receive. It is rigorously tested to meet our internal quality specifications, which includes inspecting it for the correct color, taste, and odor, and testing it for impurities. This meticulous process ensures the purity and safety of the alcohol used in our products.

Yes, the glycerin we use in our products is certified organic. It is derived from organic flax seed oil that we source from a trusted vendor. Like all our ingredients, our glycerin adheres to rigorous quality standards. We test it thoroughly to ensure it meets our internal quality specifications, which involves checking its color, taste, and odor, as well as conducting tests for impurities. Our glycerin is soy-free and gluten-free.

The time it takes to experience the effects of our liquid herbal extracts can vary and depends on the specific herb and your unique health constellation. You may notice effects within as few as a few minutes, or even weeks after working with your selected herb. It's important to acknowledge that herbal remedies do not offer a universal solution for everyone. If a particular herb isn't yielding the expected results, trying different herbal alternatives and/or consulting with your herbalist or holistic health practitioner may be the next step.

To identify how an herbal product may be able to help you, look first to the herb or herbs that are its ingredients. Each herb has unique properties and benefits which are widely documented in herbal literature and research. We offer starting insights on our website and product labels regarding general use for each product and its herbal ingredients. For a more in-depth understanding, you may wish to turn to resources such as books and courses offered by experienced herbalists.

You may also consult with your herbalist or holistic health practitioner trained in herbal medicine for valuable insights into what herbs may be most suitable for your unique health constellation. Note that individual responses to herbs can differ, so your personal experience with certain herbs should also be a consideration in choosing the right herbal product for you.

Environmental sustainability is deeply important to us, and that includes our packaging.

Our liquid products are housed in glass bottles which you can recycle at your local facility after peeling off the labels. Alternatively, you can reuse these bottles—just order a larger size (8oz or above) of a liquid product and use a metal funnel to easily refill smaller, empty 1oz, 2oz, and 4oz bottles. This reuse is, in fact, the most sustainable option!

You may remove the glass part of the dropper used with our smaller liquid herbal extract bottles. Gently separate it from the bulb top and recycle it with your glass items. The twist cap is plastic and can be recycled with plastic items, but the bulb is rubber and not typically recyclable in conventional residential recycling systems.

Our glass crème, salve, tea, and powder jars can be recycled locally, unless you choose to reuse them. The aluminum lids of our tea and powder jars may be recycled with other aluminum in your local residential recycling program, after you remove and discard the polyethylene (PE) liners from their underside—the liners are not recyclable. The plastic (polypropylene, or PP) lids of our crème and salve jars may be recycled with plastic items, after you remove and discard their foam liners.

Metal tins for smaller-sized salves can be recycled locally.

The paper pouches we use for Immune Broth, dried herbs, and larger sizes of teas must be discarded if they feature a metal moisture-safe liner.

We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint while ensuring our products maintain their high quality.

We appreciate your commitment to sustainability. However, due to FDA regulations, we're unable to accept returned empty glass bottles or jars for reuse in our production. These regulations are in place to ensure the safety and quality of our products. However, we encourage you to reuse these containers at home. For example, you can easily refill our 1oz, 2oz, or 4oz dropper bottles from our larger 8oz size using a metal funnel. This not only reduces waste but also provides a cost-effective way for you to continue enjoying our herbal products.

Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding often depends on the specific herbs used in a product. Our product labels carry separate cautions for pregnancy and breastfeeding. If there isn't a specific caution on the product label for one of these, we are not aware of any specific contraindications or issues for use. Because each individual is unique, and because pregnancy and breastfeeding are such sensitive times, we highly recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or a holistic health practitioner trained in herbal medicine before using any herbal products. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health history and the herbs in the product.

Herbalist Deb Soule notes the following as herbs to avoid during pregnancy, however please consult your midwife for further information:

  • Hops
  • Juniper berries
  • Kava
  • Motherwort
  • Mugwort
  • Pennyroyal
  • Poke root
  • Rue
  • Sage
  • Southernwood
  • Tansy
  • Thuja
  • Uva Ursi
  • Wormwood

Safety during breastfeeding, like pregnancy, often depends on the specific herbs used in a product. Our product labels carry separate cautions for pregnancy and breastfeeding. If there isn't a specific caution on the product label for one of these, we are not aware of any specific contraindications or issues for use. However, because each individual is unique, and because pregnancy and breastfeeding are such sensitive times, we highly recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or a holistic health practitioner trained in herbal medicine before using any herbal products. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health history and the herbs in the product.

"Consciously Wildcrafted" refers to the careful and mindful harvesting of herbs that grow naturally in their wild habitat. We only harvest these plants when they are thriving in abundance and can sustainably withstand the harvest. This is done with respect for the plant and its surrounding ecosystem, ensuring minimal impact on the environment, and always leaving enough plants behind for the population to regenerate.

"Sustainably Cultivated" means that the herbs are grown on our own farm or by our trusted partner farmers, following sustainable, organic, and often Biodynamic farming practices. This includes nurturing the soil health, using renewable resources, conserving water, and minimizing waste. The aim is to produce high-quality herbs while maintaining the balance and well-being of the earth's ecosystems.

Crèmes, salves, and balms serve different purposes in skincare and are made using distinct processes.

Our crèmes are lighter, water-based moisturizers that absorb quickly into the skin. They are ideal for hydrating and nourishing the skin, providing a cooling and refreshing feel. Crèmes are usually used on the face and body for general skincare and moisturization.

Our salves are olive-oil-based and thicker in texture, created by infusing herbs into oils and then thickening the mixture with beeswax. Salves sit on the skin's surface for longer and create a protective barrier. They are often used for more targeted purposes such as soothing occasionally dry, rough, or chapped skin. Due to their thicker consistency, salves provide a more intensive and longer-lasting moisturizing effect.

Our balms are very similar to our salves, also being olive-oil-based and infused with herbs. The main distinction lies in their consistency and application. Balms generally have a texture that is slightly thicker due to a higher proportion of beeswax. This makes them perfect for areas that need targeted, long-lasting coverage and protection. Balms are especially well-suited for dry or chapped skin areas due to environmental challenges, or as in the case of our Firefly Balm, when a "hot and cold" effect is desired for muscles sore from physical activity. The denser texture of balms enables them to provide an enduring barrier on the skin, aiding in deep moisturization and protection.

In the production of our topical oils, crèmes, and salves, we use certified organic, cold-pressed olive oil as our primary base oil. Our selection of this olive oil ensures that our skincare offerings are of the highest quality, aligning with our commitment to organic and sustainable practices. It also guarantees that the oil has been extracted without the use of heat or chemicals, so as to preserve the integrity of the oil's natural, vitalizing properties for your skin's optimal wellness.

Depending on the product, we may also blend in small amounts of certified organic coconut oil, almond oil, apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil, or rosehip carrier oil.

Our topical oils, crèmes, and salves are absolutely free from synthetic preservatives and fragrances, parabens, phthalates, petroleum, glycols, artificial colors, DEA, BHT, and mineral oils.

Choosing between fresh or dried herbs for each of our products is a careful process guided by the unique qualities and benefits of each herb. Some herbs offer the most vital benefits when fresh, due to their active compounds being most effectively extracted while fresh. For other herbs, the process of drying can concentrate the active constituents in other herbs, increasing their efficacy. We are fortunate in that our processing facility is located on the same property as our certified organic and Biodynamic® gardens. This enables us to harvest and process herbs immediately, ensuring we capture their full vitality and properties in our products.

The recommended serving size depends on the age, weight, and sensitivity of each child.

For children, our typical suggested use for herbal extracts is:

1 drop/5 pounds of body weight mixed in 1-2 ounces of water or sugar-free juice. As a general guideline for children, we use Clark's Rule: Divide the child's weight (in pounds) by 150. This gives you the fraction of the adult dose appropriate to give a child. Please consult with your herbalist or holistic practitioner before giving extracts to a child, as some are too strong for children.

Absolutely! If your liquid herbal extract causes the water to turn cloudy, there's no need to worry. It's simply a natural reaction of some resinous herbs when mixed with water. You'll often observe this with herbal ingredients such as Turmeric, Milk Thistle, Propolis, Boswellia, and Elecampane. Rather than being a cause for concern, this cloudiness is a positive sign of the high-quality, natural, and unadulterated ingredients in your extract.

Absolutely! Our liquid herbal extracts can be mixed with various liquids to suit your taste preferences. You can add them to your water, tea, juice, smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, or even your soup. Just mix it well for even distribution. However, be aware that adding the extract to hot liquids might decrease the efficacy of some of its vital compounds. It's best to let your tea or soup cool down a bit before adding the extract.

It's worth mentioning that some herbs, such as those found in our Digestive Bitters, have a naturally bitter taste that can be helpful in supporting digestive health. Bitter tastes awaken normal processes within the digestive system, such as the production of digestive enzymes and bile. This helps to prepare the body for healthy digestion and nutrient absorption. So while a bitter taste may take some getting used to, it's an integral part of how these herbs work. If you're comfortable with it, we recommend tasting these herbs directly on your tongue to fully benefit from their action. However, if the taste is too intense, feel free to mix with your preferred liquid as we describe above.

Our herbal products should be stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration is not necessary. Always ensure that the bottle dropper, lid, or bag is tightly closed to maintain the product's vitality and prevent leakage. Keep all products out of reach of children and pets for safety. Following these storage guidelines will help maintain the integrity and effectiveness of our herbal products.

A liquid herbal extract is a broad term that refers to any solution that has extracted the medicinal properties of a plant. This can be done using various solvents like alcohol, vinegar, or glycerin. The result is a concentrated liquid that captures the full spectrum of beneficial compounds in the herb.

A tincture is an extract that uses alcohol as the primary solvent. The high alcohol content in tinctures not only effectively extracts a wide range of beneficial compounds from the herb, but it also serves as a preservative, giving tinctures a long shelf life.

All tinctures are liquid herbal extracts, but not all liquid herbal extracts are tinctures.

The alcohol and vegetable glycerin that we use in our products as natural solvents are certified organic and also gluten-free.

A tincture is a liquid herbal extract that uses alcohol as the solvent. This process effectively extracts a broad range of compounds from the herb, including those that might not be water-soluble. Tinctures are quickly and efficiently absorbed by the body.

A glycerite uses vegetable glycerin as the solvent instead of alcohol. Glycerites are alcohol-free, which makes them a good choice for those who wish to avoid alcohol. They have a sweet taste, making them more palatable for some people, especially children.

An elixir includes both alcohol and vegetable glycerin as solvents for extracting vital compounds from the herbal ingredients.

Each of these herbal preparations has its own strengths, and the choice between them depends on personal preference and dietary considerations. You can consult with your holistic healthcare provider or an herbalist for help deciding on the most suitable herbal preparation for your specific needs.

Liquid herbal extracts and herbal teas or powders are different forms of herbal preparations, each with their own unique advantages.

A liquid herbal extract is made when we soak herbs in a vegetable-derived solvent, such as certified organic alcohol or glycerin, to extract the medicinal compounds of the herbs. This creates a concentrated solution that can be easily absorbed and utilized by the body. Liquid herbal extracts can be taken directly or mixed with water or tea. They are convenient to use, easy to dose, and have a longer shelf life than most other herbal preparations.

Herbal teas, on the other hand, are made by infusing herbs in hot water. The heat and water extract the beneficial compounds from the herbs, which are then consumed in the liquid. Herbal teas are a comforting and traditional way to enjoy the benefits of herbs. However, they may not be as concentrated as liquid extracts, and their active compounds may degrade more quickly over time.

Herbal powders are made by grinding herbs into a fine powder that can be mixed into liquids, foods, smoothies, or encapsulated. They offer a convenient way to incorporate herbs into your diet, but like teas, they may not be as concentrated as liquid extracts.

The choice between these depends mostly on individual preference and what is most convenient to you. You can consult with your holistic healthcare provider or an herbalist if you need some help determining the most suitable form for your specific needs.

Liquid herbal extracts and essential oils are two very different types of botanical preparations, each with their unique properties and uses. Note that we sell only liquid herbal extracts, not essential oils. We do use essential oils as ingredients in a few of our finished products, though, such as Lavender essential oil or Rose Otto in some of our crèmes.

A liquid herbal extract is made by soaking herbs in a solvent, usually alcohol, for a period of time to extract vital compounds from the herbs. All of our liquid herbal extracts are intended to be taken internally (though a few can be taken both internally and applied topically as a liniment) to convey the healing benefits of the plant.

Essential oils, however, are highly concentrated plant extracts obtained through processes such as steam distillation or cold pressing. They capture the plant's pure aroma and flavor, or "essence." Essential oils are much more concentrated than herbal extracts and are typically used externally for aromatherapy or in diluted form for topical applications. Due to their potency, essential oils should not be taken internally.

Yes, you can have drinks and foods along with your liquid herbal extract. Some people choose to mix their herbal extracts into beverages or even into meals for ease of consumption or to suit their taste preferences. You can add them to your water, tea, juice, smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, or even soup. Just mix it well for even distribution. However, be aware that adding the extract to hot liquids or foods might decrease the efficacy of some of its vital compounds. It's best to let your tea or food cool down a bit before adding the extract.

If you're taking an herbal extract for its bitter constituents (like those found in our Digestive Bitters), we recommend that you take it directly by mouth at least 15 minutes before eating to awaken your bitter taste receptors and to encourage healthy digestion.

Yes, it's fine to mix different liquid herbal extracts together for consumption, as long as you continue to adhere to the safety guidelines for each individual product. However, we suggest that you limit your combination to no more than four single extracts or two blended extracts at a time, concentrating your herbal regimen on your primary health objectives.

The suggested serving size for our products is offered as a general recommendation. However, individual needs may vary. If you find that the suggested serving size isn't meeting your needs, or feels too strong, it might be appropriate to adjust the amount. It's important to tune into your body's responses and also to consult with a holistic healthcare practitioner or experienced herbalist to guide any significant changes to the recommended usage. Remember, more is not always better when it comes to herbs. Their effectiveness often relies on balance and consistency.

For our liquid herbal extracts, one full squeeze of the dropper (for all bottle sizes) typically dispenses around 15 drops, which is approximately 0.75 milliliters of liquid. However, the exact amount can vary slightly due to factors like the viscosity of the liquid and the pressure applied when squeezing. It's a good idea to count the drops the first few times to get a sense for the amount your dropper dispenses.

The number of servings in each bottle can vary depending on the specific product, the product size, and the suggested serving size. For accurate information, we encourage you to refer to the "Supplement Facts" panel located on the product label. There, you will find details including serving size and the number of servings per container. This will provide you with the most accurate information for your specific product.

In general, it's recommended to take liquid herbal extracts about 15 to 30 minutes before a meal. This is because the active components of the herbs can be absorbed more efficiently on an empty stomach. However, if you find that taking extracts on an empty stomach causes discomfort, it is perfectly fine to take them with food. Always refer to the specific usage instructions on the label or consult your holistic healthcare provider or an experienced herbalist for the best results.

The best way to prepare a cup of our herbal tea involves a few simple steps. Begin by boiling fresh, filtered water. Once the water is near boiling, add one tablespoon of the herbal tea to a teapot or infuser. Pour the water over the tea, cover, and let it steep for 5-10 minutes. This allows the vital properties of the herbs to be extracted into the water. After the steeping time, strain the tea into a cup. You can add honey or lemon to taste if you wish. Enjoy!

The best way to take liquid herbal extracts is to follow the suggested use guidelines on the product label. Dispense the recommended number of drops into approximately 1oz of water and drink. Before taking the herbs, we encourage you to pause for a moment. Consider your reasons for taking the herbs and give thanks to the plants for offering you their healing gifts.

A liquid herbal extract is a concentrated form of the beneficial constituents found in herbs. We create our extracts by soaking herbs in a natural organic solvent, vegetable-derived alcohol or glycerin, to extract their active compounds. This results in a liquid that captures the vital elements of the herb, offering a convenient and effective way to incorporate herbs into your wellness routine. They can be taken directly or diluted in water, and are often preferred due to their high absorption rate and long shelf life.

A single liquid herbal extract is made from one specific herb. It allows you to experience the distinct properties and benefits of that particular plant. This can be helpful when you want to address a specific wellness concern or when you want to understand how your body responds to a particular herb.

A blended liquid herbal extract combines multiple herbs in a single recipe. Each blend is carefully designed so that the herbs work synergistically, amplifying each other's effects or providing a broader range of benefits. Blended extracts can be useful when you're looking to support multiple facets of your well-being or when you want a more consolidated approach to your herbal regimen.

Our liquid herbal products are handcrafted and some may contain a noticeable layer of sediment at the bottom of the bottle or visible in the dropper. We recommend gently shaking the bottle before use.

In part, the manufacturing process consists of extracting plant material into an extraction liquid, then pressing the mixture to retrieve the liquid. This pressing process is done without filtration, so it is normal for some plant material to remain in the extraction liquid as sediment. The plant constituents that you may see as visible sediment offer valuable properties that underscore the vitality of the herb featured in the extract.

Yes, many of our customers have used our products successfully with their pets. However, the dosage and suitability of a specific herbal product can vary widely depending on the species, weight, age, and overall health of your pet. We strongly recommend consulting with a holistic veterinarian before starting any new herbal regimen for your pet. It's also important to monitor your pet closely for any changes in their behavior or physical condition when introducing new herbal products to them.

Yes, most of our products are suitable for use with children. However, the appropriate serving size will differ from the adult serving size due to the child's weight and age. As a general guideline, we use Clark's Rule: Divide the child's weight (in pounds) by 150. This gives you the fraction of the adult dose suitable for a child.

We do offer several non-alcoholic glycerites that are often ideal for children. These glycerites maintain the benefits of the herbs but without the alcohol content typically found in tinctures. This makes them gentler and often more palatable for children. That said, any of our tinctures can be added to a small amount of water to dilute the taste and alcohol content, making them easier for children to take.

We suggest that you consult with a holistic healthcare provider before administering any herbal products to children. Keep all of our herbal products out of reach of children when not in use.

It is possible that some herbs could interact with specific medications or other supplements you are taking. We offer information on our product labels as a general guide, however, this should not replace personalized advice from your holistic healthcare practitioner. They can help you understand any potential interactions with your current medications or supplements, taking into consideration your unique health history and wellness goals. They can also help you monitor any changes and make necessary adjustments to your regimen.

Yes, many of our herbal products are designed for daily use. However, the frequency of use can depend on the specific product and your individual health needs. Some herbal extracts might be used every day for overall wellness support, while others might be used for a specific period of time to address particular health goals.

To ensure that you're using each product in the best way for your health and wellness, we recommend following the "suggested use" instructions provided on the product label. If you have any questions or need specific guidance, consider consulting with a holistic healthcare practitioner with training in herbal medicine for personalized advice.

Remember that it's important to give your body a break occasionally. A common practice is to pause for one week every 4-6 weeks when using an herbal extract consistently. Your practitioner can help you identify a schedule that is best for you.

Also, keep in mind that individual responses to herbs can vary and what works best for one person may not be the same for another. Listening to your body and observing how it responds to the herbs can be a good practice.

The best time to take herbs can vary depending on the specific herb and its intended use. Generally, most people find it beneficial to take herbs at a consistent time each day. This can help establish a routine and ensure regular intake. For example, herbs meant to support healthy energy and focus may be most helpful when taken in the morning, while those intended to support sleep and relaxation may be better to take in the evening. Digestive herbs are often taken before meals to support digestion.

You may refer to each product label for any specific instructions or consult with your holistic healthcare practitioner to determine the best time for you to take your herbs.

Choosing between a tincture and a glycerite comes down to personal preference, dietary considerations, and sometimes the specific herb involved.

A tincture is a liquid extract of an herb that is made using alcohol as the solvent. The alcohol is effective at extracting a broad spectrum of compounds from the herb, including those that might not be water-soluble. Tinctures are quickly and efficiently absorbed by the body. However, the taste can be strong and some people prefer to avoid alcohol for various reasons.

A glycerite, on the other hand, uses vegetable glycerin as the solvent. Glycerites are alcohol-free and have a sweet taste, which can make them more palatable, especially for children or those sensitive to the taste of alcohol. However, glycerin may not extract as wide a range of compounds from the herb as alcohol.

The alcohol and vegetable glycerin that we use in our products as natural solvents are certified organic and also gluten-free.

Our founder and herbalist, Deb Soule, carefully crafted the recipes for each of our herbal products using her knowledge of which naturally-derived solvents are most effective at extracting the vital compounds of each herb. In some cases, both alcohol and glycerin are equally suitable, and we may offer both formats for that herb in our product line, leaving the choice up to you and your own preference.

You can always consult with your holistic healthcare provider or herbalist if you need help deciding on the most suitable herbal preparation for your specific needs.

"From Seed to Bottle" represents our commitment to lovingly handcrafting our herbal products from the planting of the seed in our certified organic and Biodynamic® gardens all the way through to the bottling of the product and shipment of it to you. We are honored to act as caring stewards of these plants, mindfully nurturing them as they grow, harvesting them with gratitude, and processing them in our facility in small, artisanal batches.

Being able to process medicinal plants on-site, just steps away from our garden, ensures that we harness their active constituents at peak vitality. This means the herbs in your bottle are especially vibrant and high quality.

We are deeply committed to providing quality herbal products, however we're not able to give personal health advice or recommend specific herbs for medical conditions.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to a clinical herbalist who can provide you with personalized advice tailored to your specific health concerns. The American Herbalists Guild (www.americanherbalistsguild.com) is a great resource for finding an herbalist.

You may also want to consider seeking out a holistically-minded medical doctor, nurse practitioner, or naturopathic doctor in your area who has a specialized background in herbal medicine.

The benefits of the Biodynamic® farming practices we follow can be experienced through the quality and vibrancy of our products.

Our founder, herbalist and gardener Deb Soule began working with the Biodynamic® planting calendar in 1986 and has been using Biodynamic® preparations on our farm since 1998. Over 75% of the herbs used in our products are grown on our Demeter-certified Biodynamic® and MOFGA-certified organic farm. The remaining herbs are sourced from our trusted organic and Biodynamic® partner farms, with a handful being sustainably cultivated or consciously wildcrafted.

Biodynamic® agriculture views the farm as a living, interdependent ecosystem, going beyond organic farming by embracing a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to agriculture. This practice considers the interplay of lunar and planetary rhythms, aiming for alignment with unseen but deeply sensed natural energies. We seed, plant, water, and collect herbs in rhythm with cosmic forces. The quality of our soil and compost is enhanced by Biodynamic® preparations which in turn effects the exceptional flavor and vitality of our herbs.

For those interested in a more comprehensive understanding of Biodynamic® agriculture, we recommend Deb Soule's book, How To Move Like a Gardener, in which she dedicates an entire chapter to Biodynamic® preparations.

Garden

Yes, we do save our seeds!

Our dedication to Biodynamic® practices includes a strong commitment to maintaining seed integrity and diversity. We plant only organic and Biodynamic seeds in our gardens, with a special preference for open-pollinated and heirloom varieties. This allows us to preserve the genetic richness and resilience of our plants.

Mindful seed stewardship helps us contribute to sustainable agriculture and fosters a deep connection between our herbs and their environment.

We are ardent admirers and supporters of pollinators! For almost three decades, we've diligently cultivated our Pollinator Sanctuary Garden for these incredible creatures. This vibrant space serves as a haven for pollinators such as ruby-throated hummingbirds (a beloved pollinator featured in our company logo), native bees and butterflies, honeybees, wasps, bats, and over 60 different species of birds.

Pollinators exhibit the beauty of reciprocity and serve as important educators about the intricate balance of nature. They are incredibly sensitive to climate change and require safe sanctuaries in which they can thrive, especially along their migration paths.

In our work, we promote awareness about pollinators. We educate about the importance of maintaining healthy, toxin-free soil, growing a diversity of flowering plants, and practicing seed stewardship. Our practices are not just a nod to the more-than-human world, but an act of respect and gratitude toward the web of life.

Company

Our mission is to create the highest quality herbal products while nurturing plants, people, and pollinators. We make our products using Fresh, Organic & Biodynamic® Herbs. These vital plants along with a sacred connection to place promote wellness of the body, mind, and spirit and encourage humans to be mindful and loving stewards of the Earth.
